Minors vs Keel/Listry – Mid-Kerry Minor League Final – 08/09/12

Mid-Kerry Minor League Final 2012 – Saturday 8th September 2012

Laune Rangers: 0-10

Keel/Listry: 0-12

Laune Rangers and Keel/Listry met in fabulous sunshine to contest the 2012 Mid-Kerry Minor League Final on Saturday last in Milltown.

In a game that ebbed and flowed through-out, either side could have been crowed Champions but it was to be Keel/Listry who would take the honours at the final whistle.

Laune Rangers registered the opening score of the match with a point from the boot of Jack O’Connor from a free in the second minute. This point was cancelled by a ball that caught Rangers’ keeper, Gary Naughton, unawares and bounced over the bar for Keel/Listry’s opening score.

Daniel Macbeth put Laune Rangers back in front in the 3rd minute of the game which was  followed by a John O’Shea effort in the 7th minute to put Laune Rangers two ahead; 0-03 to 0-01. Laune Rangers’ lead didn’t last long however as two pointed Joe Clifford frees in the 10th and 14th minutes of the half saw the sides level for the second time at 0-03 a piece.

Liam Quirke pointed for Laune Rangers in the 17th minute of the first half, following some good work from Westley Delaney in the Rangers’ forward line. Laune Rangers had a goal chance soon after when Liam Quirke was bearing down on the Keel/Listry goal. Quirke shot low and hard but saw his shot saved by Stephen Cahillane in the Keel/Listry goal. Quirke again tried to flick the rebound into the net but was again stopped, this time by the upright, and the ball went over the end-line.

In the 19th minute, Westley Delaney extended Laune Rangers lead back out to two points oncemore.  Again Keel/Listry came back and closed Rangers lead, this time from the boot of Shane Prendiville who split the Laune Rangers posts when he was gifted a ball by the Laune Rangers defence. Kieran Brosnan leveled the game for the third time when he slotted over a point in the 24th minute.

The O’Shea’s, Gavin and Michael, swapped points in the closing minutes of the half to leave the sides level at the short whistle. Half-time score: Laune Rangers 0-06 to 0-06 Keel/Listry.

Keel/Listry took the lead for the first time in the game in the 2nd minute of the second half when Kieran Brosnan cleanly won a Laune Rangers kick-out. A foul on Gary O’Sullivan saw Joe Clifford extend his personal tally for the afternoon and give Keel/Listry a one point advantage; 0-07 to 0-06.

In a quiet 10 minute period, Laune Rangers continued to attack the Keel/Listry goal but could not register the all important scores. In the 11th minute it was Rangers’ John O’Shea who pointed from a free to level the game once more.

A Westley Delaney pointed free mid-way through the second half saw Laune Rangers re-take the lead at 0-08 to 0-07. However, their lead didn’t last long as Keel/Listry worked well to clear a ball from the Laune Rangers back line. When Kieran Brosnan was fouled, Joe Clifford made no mistake and the game was level once more!

John O’Shea pointed another Laune Rangers free in the 18th minute of the half to give Laune Rangers the advantage going into the final 10 minutes of the game. Gary O’Sullivan found himself in front of the Rangers’ goal in the 22nd minute but his final shot fell short to Laune Rangers keeper, Gary Naughton.  Naughton cleared as far as Kevin Courtney who passed off to substitute, Niall Sheehan who calmly pointed to level the game at 0-09 each with 5 minutes on the clock.

The game could have went either way in the final few minutes with both sides having scoring chances. It was Keel/Listry who made the most of theirs however. John O’Shea put Laune Rangers 0-10 to 0-09 ahead in the 25th minute but his score was cancelled out by a Kieran Brosnan effort in the 26th minute.

Joe Clifford pointed from a free in the 27th minute of the half seeing Keel/Listry 0-11 to 0-10 to the good. Laune Rangers went in search of the equalisier but with time running out the odds were against them. John Lawlor regained possession for the combination side in injury time and mid-fielder Kevin Courtney slotted over a final point to leave the full-time score: Laune Rangers 0-10 to 0-12 Keel/Listry.

Captain Stephen Cahillane was presented with the trophy after the game while Keel/Listry’s corner forward and sharp-shooter, Joe Clifford, was presented with the Man-of-the-Match award.
